A rare edition of this version of the Bible intended for a Protestant audience, complete with a commentary by the humanist and theologian Sébastien Castellio (1515–1563), also known as Châtaillon or Castellion.

Having converted to the Reformation in 1541, Castellio moved to Basel, where he published his own translation of the Bible and numerous other writings; his theological positions, however, soon brought him into conflict with Calvin, particularly on the doctrine of predestination. The Index Librorum Prohibitorum of the Roman Church severely condemned this version of the Bible, prohibiting it "quandocunque, ubicunque et a quocunque impressa" (whenever, wherever, and by whomever printed).
