Johann Sleidan's work represents one of the highest moments of political and religious historiography of the sixteenth century.
Humanist, diplomat and direct observer of the events of the Reformation, Sleidan is an intellectual who tries to give order and rationality to an era marked by doctrinal conflicts, institutional transformations and deep social tensions.
The Commentarii are often considered the first great "official" history of the Protestant Reformation, with the figure of Charles V and the struggle for the religious and political unity of the Empire at the center.

In the second work, Sleidan traces the history of the great ancient empires — Babylonian, Persian, Greek and Roman.
