His real name was Hafenbredl, which he later changed to Hubner. He was first secretary to the Austrian ambassador in Lisbon and then elected consul in Leipzig. In 1848 he was in Milan and during the Five Days' Uprising he was kidnapped as a hostage and remained a prisoner for several months. Returning to Austria he was appointed ambassador to France and in 1865 to the Holy See: it was he who negotiated the abolition of the Concordat of 1855. He also held the position of Minister of Police in the Rechberg cabinet and in 1879 he became a life member of the House of Lords. As a writer he composed autobiographical texts relating to the years 1848-1859 and published various volumes dedicated to his long travels entitled Promenade autour du monde and A travers l'Empire britannique . He also wrote a work in three volumes on the figure of Pope Sixtus V and in Italian printed in Rome in 1859 La monarchia austriaca dopo Villafranca . See: G.
