AFRICA , vulgo APHRODISIUM
Penon de Veles: Cologne; c. 1570-1600
depicts the 1550 Capture of Mahdia (an ancient and medieval fortified coastal city in Tunisia, historically referred to as Aphrodisium) by the Spanish-Genoese fleet.
An amphibious siege and naval battle showing the narrow fortified isthmus and peninsula of Mahdia surrounded by numerous sailing vessels (galleys, carracks, and war fleets) bombarding the city, alongside land troops and artillery encampments in the foreground.
The military operation in 1550 where combined forces under Charles V, the Genoese admiral Andrea Doria, and the Spanish captured Mahdia from Ottoman forces led by Turgut Reis (Dragut).
The view/map composition derives from early 16th-century sources (such as Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen's works and accounts like Juan Christoval Calvete's 1551 book De Aphrodisio expugnata), and was famously published in multi-volume atlases and civic town books such as Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg's Civitates orbis terrarum (late 16th to early 17th century) and subsequent European map
