Codex Justiniani

(Corpus Juris Civilis)

Lugduni (Lyon), Apud Gulielmum Rouillium (Guillaume Rouillé); 1571.

Tomus Secundus (in 2 volumes, with one title page)

 [824] pp., 825-1520 pp., [168] lvs. of indexes/tables

In two books only the last 6 books (Books VI-XII) of the Codex Iustiniani repetitae praelectionis, the great collection of Roman imperial constitutions ordered by Justinian.

Includes fundamental sections on hereditary law, trusts, crimes, procedures, military privileges, decurions, usucaption, etc., with commentaries and typographical apparatus by the humanist Antonius Contius (Antoine Leconte).

Features woodcut decorations, decorated initials and chronological tables (with references to Contius).

This is an important 16th-century Lyon edition of the Justinian Codex, a cornerstone of Roman law and the foundation of continental European civil law.

Rouillé's edition, edited by Contius, is prized for its philological accuracy and the practicality of its pocket-sized format.

Complete or partial editions of the 1571 Corpus Iuris Civilis are rare on the market today, especially in this small "study" format intended for jurists and students.

This volume represents a fundamental piece in the humanistic reception of Roman law, which profoundly influenced modern legal thought.

With period manuscript to the endpaper.
