The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio was banned primarily for its explicit sexual content, mockery of the clergy, and harsh criticism of the church, leading to its inclusion on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum (Index of Forbidden Books) in 1559, as well as 20th-century bans for obscenity in the U.S. and other nations.
It was viewed as immoral and heretical.
