André d'Evora
Exemplorum memorabilium, cum ethnicorum, tum christianorum
Latin collection of notable examples and moral stories compiled by the Portuguese humanist and scholar André de Resende (Andreas Eborensis)
Paris: Guillaume Julian; 1575
Rarest edition of this vast moral and scholarly compilation gathering edifying examples drawn from both Pagan Antiquity and the Christian tradition to instruct readers about virtues, vices, religious duties and exemplary human behaviors
The work is part of the Renaissance humanist tradition, which sought to reconcile the moral heritage of ancient authors with Christian teaching, using historical narratives, famous anecdotes and biographies of remarkable people as instruments of spiritual and intellectual education
André d’Evora gathers a multitude of examples borrowed from Greek and Latin historians, from ancient philosophers, from biblical texts, from the lives of saints, from medieval chroniclers and ecclesiastical authors, organizing these narratives by moral themes such as courage, justice, fidelity, temperance, piety, charity or also pride, greed and cruelty
Original binding is tight, but leather has been destroyed (as visible on the photos)
