Plautus was a Roman playwright, known for his comedies.
His comedic plays are the earliest compete surviving works by a Roman writer (although some of his surviving works are missing portions).
Much of Plautus' work is based on Greek plays or techniques, but Plautus created several aspects of playwriting and stagecraft, much of which is still in use today.
He is best remembered today for his farce, Menaechmi, which is the basis for Shakespeare's A Comedy of Errors. His work also inspired Moliere, as well as the modern musical comedy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
