A careful critical edition of the writings of the Desert Father Cassian (c. 360-c. 435), to whom, as is well known, the doctrine of the fourfold sense of Scripture, relevant for Catholic biblical exegesis, is attributed, with the Regula SS. Patrum in its first printing.
The edition was prepared by the Leuven theologian Henricus Cuykius (1546-1609).
This edition far surpasses the two previous ones printed in Basel and Lyon, respectively, as the editor had several new manuscripts at his disposal.
Part 2 contains, from page 108 onwards, a list of variant readings and the critical apparatus.
Original limp vellum binding, manuscript title to the spine.
Front cover is damaged.
Very good interior except repaired title page margin.
Size: 4 1/2 by 6 3/4 inches

D. Ioannis Cassian, or John Cassian (c. 360-435 AD), was a foundational Christian monk, theologian, and spiritual writer who introduced Eastern monastic traditions to the Western Church, documenting the wisdom of the Egyptian Desert Fathers in his influential Latin works like The Institutes and Conferences, shaping Western monasticism, including the Rule of St. Benedict, through his teachings on ascetic life, virtues, and vices.
