============================
Ascanio Pipino de' Mori da Ceno ( 1533 – 1591 ) was an Italian poet and soldier .

Descendant of the noble Da Ceno family , he was the son of Agostino , captain in the service of the Duke of Mantua Federico Gonzaga and of Barbara Bettoni, both living in Birbesi , where Ascanio was perhaps born.

Ascanio was a soldier, official, poet and man of letters in the service of Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga .
Raised in Mantua, he studied literature in Bologna and took up military life, fighting in the Turkish-Venetian Wars under the command of Orazio Gonzaga , Marquis of Solferino , where he supervised the construction of the castle after returning to his homeland.

In 1562 he became a member of the Academy of the Invaghiti of Mantua with the name of "Candido".
From 1576 to 1583 he held the position of Commissioner of Ceresara and was governor of Solferino , where he moved under the orders of Orazio Gonzaga.
In Medole he became literary advisor to Giovanni Battista Cavallara , Gonzaga court doctor from 1578 , who also took care of the health of the poet Torquato Tasso , freed in Ferrara where he was detained in 1586 through the intercession of the duke Guglielmo Gonzaga who wanted him at his court. Tasso met Ascanio de' Mori and became his friend .
In 1583 Ascanio moved to Mantua, seat of the Duchy , to the court of the Gonzaga.
In 1585 he published fifteen novellas , among which we remember: Giuoco piacevole , Ragionamento in lode delle donne and Alcuni rime . Frequent references to his rhymes and novellas are found in the letters , in particular in those addressed to Cavallara, Tasso and another Mantuan man of letters, Antonio Beffa Negrini .
He died in Mantua in 1591.

In Medole, his birthplace, the Palazzo Ceni still stands , a noble family descended from Ascanio de' Mori da Ceno and originating from the town of Ceno, now Cene , in the province of Bergamo .
