As a poet, he was patronized by Frederick, King of Naples, and he accompanied that monarch in his exile to France. His best known work is the pastoral poem, Arcadia, which is esteemed as a model of elegance and purity of verse. While traveling in Venice, Sir Philip Sidney is said to have purchased the 1571 Sansovino edition of Sannazaro, and, as Katherine Duncan-Jones reports in her 1991 Sidney biography: “This purchase was momentous for Elizabethan ‘Golden’ literature, for it determined the title and genre of Sidney’s own Arcadia and also, if the theory [first put forth in a 1988 article by S.K. Heninger] is correct, the format, at least, of Spenser’s Shepheardes Calender (1579), designed to recall to its dedicatee, Sidney, the Sannazaro volume” (Sir Philip Sidney, Courtier Poet, p. 77).Adams S332.
