This work is the first privately printed book in England (London: John Day, 1572).
Authored by Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury, it traces the history of the English Church and its 70 Archbishops up to Reginald Pole.
Parker wrote it to assert the Church of England's ancient independence from Rome.The book was a monumental collaborative effort from Parker's circle of antiquaries, including John Joscelyn and George Acworth.
It sought to prove that the English Church was not a novel creation of the Reformation, but rather a revival of the ancient, primitive British Church. By meticulously detailing the lineage of the Archbishops of Canterbury and the historic privileges of the See, Parker provided historical legitimacy for the Elizabethan religious settlement and the royal supremacy.The original print run was famously tiny—fewer than 50 copies were initially produced to be distributed among highly influential figures. Later expanded to include 70 archbishops (with some expanded 1605 editions reaching 71), it remains a foundational source for understanding the historiography and religious thought of the English Reformation
