Rare 1st edition of one of the first scholarly handbooks of geography and a work that long held its position as the best treatise in existence on scientific and comparative geography, written by the German scholar Varenius (1622-1650), who was famous for his Description of Japan (1649).
The work describes figures and dimensions of the earth, the influences of the sun, moon, climate and seasons and practical applications of geography in map making and navigation, including globe and map-construction.
At the end, it also discusses the "ars nautica".
