img{max-width:100%} FLORIANI DA MACERATA, PIETRO PAOLO (1585-1638) DIFESA ET OFFESA DELLE PIAZZE Venice: Francesco Baba; 1654 Folio: 13 1/4 x 9 1/4" engraved title page, full-page engraved author portrait, illustrated with a suite of fifty-two engravings numbered 1-51 and including 14A & 14B, some are text engravings, forty-three are full page plates, and one is a large folding plate bound at the end; bound in original vellum over boards with manuscript title at the spine front hinge broken, very good interior, lacks ties ----------------------------------- Floriani (1585-1638) , Italian military architect and engineer, served Philip III in Madrid before entering the service of Archduke Leopold, working on the fortifications of Brisach, Vienna , Hungary and Pressburg. He was involved in multiple fortification projects in response to fears of an invasion of southern Europe from North Africa. He later worked for the Barberini in Rome and Ferrara before being asked to assist with the defences of Valletta, the capital of Malta.
