Illustrated with two  frontispieces and 21 Sultan's portraits

Part 1 opens with the rise of the early Ottoman sultans and the aggressive expansion of their empire, with a strong emphasis on the shocking fall of Constantinople in 1453 and the subsequent military threat to Christian Europe.
Part 3 shifts the focus to the early and mid-17th century, in which internal decadence, harem intrigues and bloody palace revolutions within the court in Istanbul are central, interspersed with descriptions of renewed military confrontations and diplomatic relations with European powers up to the reign of the 23rd sultan.
