First edition of this monumental biography of Philip II of Spain, one of the most challenging and controversial works by the prolific Milanese historian Gregorio Leti (1630-1701), known as "the Resurrected."
After a Catholic youth and periods in Venice and Turin, Leti converted to Calvinism and settled in Geneva, where he published numerous lives of popes and sovereigns (most famously that of Sixtus V).
The Life of Philip II - a vast critical compilation based on contemporary sources, purged of religious bias and arranged chronologically - marked the end of his stay in Geneva:
accused of offending the Reformed religion and the city itself, it led to his expulsion in 1679.
The work offers a broad and lively overview of 16th-century European politics: the Italian Wars, the struggle against the Turks, the revolt of the Netherlands, the Inquisition, royal marriages, the Spanish court, and diplomacy. It also contains lists of noble titles created by the king and a "Dilucidazione" (Explanation) of the kingdoms and countries held by Philip II.

First edition, published in Geneva under a false place of printing ("Coligni").
A work of considerable interest for seventeenth-century historiography and for Leti's European fortune, sought after both for its documentary content and the author's biographical and religious context.
Uncommonly complete and in a period binding.
