================================
Herodian was a 3rd-century Greek historian who wrote Ab Excessu Divi Marci (Greek: Herodianou Historion Biblia or History of the Roman Empire).

The surviving eight-book masterpiece is an invaluable contemporary account detailing Roman imperial history, political turmoil, and rapid institutional changes from 180 to 238 AD.

Herodian’s history is divided into eight books, systematically covering a tumultuous era of the Roman Empire:

Book 1: The reign and assassination of Emperor Commodus (180–192 AD).
Book 2: The chaotic "Year of the Five Emperors" and the rise of Septimius Severus (193 AD).
Book 3: The reign of Septimius Severus.
Book 4: The reign of Caracalla and his assassination.
Book 5: The reigns of Macrinus and Elagabalus.
Book 6: The reign of Severus Alexander.
Book 7: The reign of Maximinus Thrax and the beginning of the revolt in Africa.
Book 8: The "Year of the Six Emperors" and the accession of Gordian III (238 AD).

It is one of the few surviving historical texts from antiquity that has reached the modern era completely intact.

 Herodian claims to have served in an official imperial capacity. His work provides a highly valuable, eyewitness perspective on the sweeping crises of the third century, complementing the historical writings of Cassius Dio.

Written in Greek, the work was aimed primarily at citizens living in the eastern, Greek-speaking half of the Roman Empire.
