A substantial folio set comprising Clarendon’s great history of the English Civil War along with his autobiographical continuation. Written by Edward Hyde—a principal Royalist statesman and close advisor to Charles I and Charles II—the History remains one of the most important contemporary narratives of the conflict, composed largely in exile and reflecting a distinctly Royalist interpretation of events. First issued in parts between 1702 and 1704, the present three-volume folio represents an early collected edition, with the third volume preceding the first two in publication.

The accompanying Life (1759), printed from Clarendon’s original manuscripts preserved at Oxford, serves both as autobiography and as a continuation of the narrative, extending from the Restoration to his fall from power and exile in 1667. Together, these works form a cornerstone source for the study of the English Civil War and Restoration, valued for their scope, immediacy, and insight into Royalist political thought.

Bindings quite worn with hinges cracked, various scuffs and chips. Second volume with front board detached. Contents mostly clean, though third volume with some light faded marginal water staining.
The engraved frontispieces in the three volumes of the History are trimmed and mounted.
The accompanying Life with front board detached;
contents generally clean.
