The "Spanish Netherlands, commonly called Flanders" was a collective term for the Habsburg-ruled territories (1556–1714) that roughly correspond to modern Belgium, Luxembourg, and parts of northern France.
Named for its economic and demographic dominance, "Flanders" became a colloquial catch-all for these prosperous northern provinces under the Spanish Crown.
