The work begins with an analysis of the Gallic peoples before the Roman conquest, their methods of combat, their war organization and their relations with the invaders -

Daniel then examines the integration of Gaul into the Roman Empire, describing Roman military structures, the discipline of the legions, the border defense systems and the lasting influence exerted by Rome on the military practices of the Gallic provinces -

After the fall of the Empire, he focuses on the establishment of the Franks in Gaul, the rise of Clovis I and the gradual formation of the Frankish monarchy. The author describes the Merovingian armies, composed mainly of warriors personally bound to their leaders, and shows how military obligations were embedded in the social and political structures of the kingdom -
