Psalterium Romanum dispositum per hebdomadam.
Venetiis: Ex Typographia Balleoniana; 1737
Large, massive folio: 13.5 by 20" (574x423 mm)
This imposing Venetian Psalterium Romanum from 1737 is not just a liturgical book, but a true ceremonial object designed for the scenic presence of the altar and the ecclesiastical choir.
Some wear, old repairs
Monumental original leather binding of extraordinary scenographic impact, in an antique neo-Renaissance style, made of full brown leather on wooden boards
with impressive brass corner fittings, and with large metal studs which had a function not only ornamental but also practical:
they protected the volume when it was placed on lecterns or tables in convent libraries,
preventing direct contact between leather and the surfaces.
Title page printed in red and black with woodcut printer's mark.
Text in red and black, in Latin
--------------------------------------
The Psalterium Romanum represents one of the fundamental texts of the pre-conciliar Catholic liturgy, intended for the recitation and singing of the Psalms according to the weekly distribution of the Divine Office. In the Baroque era, these volumes often assumed monumental forms, designed for collective consultation in conventual choirs and large churches. The red and black printing was not only aesthetic but also served to distinguish rubrics, ritual indications, and sung parts, facilitating liturgical use.
----------------------------------------------
The Baglioni workshop was one of the most active Venetian printing houses of the 18th century, also specializing in liturgical production for churches, convents, and religious institutions in the Serenissima and surrounding areas. The large choral books and psalters printed in Venice continued to enjoy widespread circulation well into the 18th century, inheriting a typographic tradition that dated back to the great Venetian liturgical incunabula of the 15th century.
Complete copies of their original monumental bindings are relatively rare on the market today, as many volumes were dismembered, remade, or heavily restored during the 19th century
