Compiled in the 5th or 6th century AD, the lexicon, more than the title might suggest, is an invaluable resource for Greek literature and language. Compiled from multiple earlier sources, the lexicon provides numerous quotations from otherwise lost literary texts, numerous dialect glosses, and detailed historical information not contained anywhere else (such as the names of Athenian gene social groups). The Lexicon survives in a single, corrupt, and damaged manuscript copied in the 15th century and preserved in Venice. Alberti's was the first since the editio princeps to make significant advances in the reading of the manuscript and the constitution of the text.
