Translated from the Latin Vulgate into Czech.

Numerous woodcut illustrations in text;
volume 2 with engraved title page and full-page engraving of St. Mark.

Second edition of the Svatovaclavska, or St. Wenceslaus, Bible in Czech, produced by the Jesuits translating the Sixto-Clementine Vulgate.

In many ways a product of the counter-reformation and the Tridentine reforms, as well as a reaction to the Kralice Bible, which the Jesuits saw as well-written but erroneous in some of the translations due to its translation by the Moravian Unity of the Brethren.
They also preferred to translate from the Vulgate, as opposed to the translating the Masoretic Text and Textus Receptus as Protestants and humanists preferred by this time.

The New Testament translation was first published in 1677 and the Old Testament between 1712-1715.
In this edition, the NT was published in 1769, the OT in 1771.

It is known as the Wenceslaus Bible after the publisher, Dedictvi svateho Vaclava (St. Wenceslaus Publishing House).

Good interior, some wear, occasional foxing, a few repairs; marginal damage to Vol. 1  title page, lacks endpapers
