The expedition, aboard the ships Resolution and Discovery, aimed to find a northern sea route, the Northwest Passage, between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
It resulted in the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands in 1778 but also ended with Cook's death in Hawaii in 1779
