"History of Vartan, and the Battle of the Armenians" is a seminal historical text by the 5th-century Armenian author Elisaeus (or Eghishe), documenting the religious wars between Christian Armenia and the Zoroastrian Sasanian Persian Empire in the mid-5th century.
It centers on the heroic stand led by Vartan Mamikonian, the supreme commander of the Armenian army, in the pivotal Battle of Avarayr in 451 AD, a battle that, though a military defeat, became a spiritual victory symbolizing the enduring fight for Armenian religious freedom and identity against Persian cultural and religious imposition.
