The book provides a firsthand, harrowing description of the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-1842), specifically focusing on the 1842 retreat from Kabul, which is considered one of the greatest disasters in British military history.
Eyre was a British officer in the East India Company who was trapped in Kabul during the 1841-42 uprising, severely wounded, and later captured by Afghan forces.
The book details the incompetence of command, the siege of the British cantonments, the disastrous decision to retreat, and the subsequent annihilation of the British-Indian force of roughly 5,000 soldiers and 12,000 camp followers by freezing temperatures and attacking Afghan tribesmen.
The latter portion of the book serves as a detailed diary of his nine-month captivity alongside his wife, child, and other British hostages under Mahomed Akber Khan.
