 A History of Indiana by John B. Dillon is a seminal, comprehensive chronicle of the state's early years.
It remains a cornerstone of Hoosier historiography for its detailed documentation of early exploration, Native American relations, and the territorial period. 
Dillon’s work spans from the earliest European explorations of the region to the close of the territorial government in 1816. It also includes an overarching summary of public affairs spanning from 1816 up to 1856.

John B. Dillon (1808–1879) was a prominent early Indiana historian, journalist, poet, and state librarian. He is often regarded as Indiana's first major professional historian. Dillon was meticulous in his research, famously scouring early government documents, letters, and rare archival materials to ensure his history was heavily grounded in primary sources.
