Written in March 1493 aboard the Niña, Christopher Columbus's first letter to Treasurer Raphael Sanchez officially announced his discovery of islands in the "Indian Sea". The letter, intended for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, described the islands' fertility, the native population's timid nature, and the immense potential for gold and Christian conversion, detailing his successful, world-altering voyage.
