The account of the dramatic rescue by an American whaling captain of six Irish Fenian prisoners from the British penal colony of Western Australia, accomplished while most of the garrison of the colony was busy watching the Perth regatta.
The captain of Catalpa, George Anthony, pursued by the British who fired a shot across his bow and demanded the 6 convicts, "...laughed and said, "If you fire on this vessel, you fire at that flag," pointing to the American flag ..." (North Otago Times, Volume XXIV, Issue 1308, 22 June 1876).
Also provides a background account of the Fenian organization.
Excellent interior condition, some discoloration of binding.
