Joni (Icilio Frederico, 1866-1946). Imitation 15th century painted and gilded binding (wooden book covers) A 'tavolette' painted and gilded folio panel binding, imitating a 15th century Sienese book cover, comprising two bevel-edged wooden boards Size 9 1/2 by 13 3/4" (folio) tempera and gilt over gesso on carved wood, with remnants of calf binding, painted in the manner of Giovanni di PaoloIcilio Federico Joni, called the "prince" of Siennese forgers, had read of the Siennese "tavolette" covers used in the 13th through 17th centuries and decorated by such artists as Renaissance master Giovanni di Paolo, but he had never actually seen them before he began to re-create them.Joni was proud of his work and even wrote an autobiography in 1936 about his efforts at recreation, though he never passed his painted covers off as originals. Some unscrupulous dealers were not so circumspect and they were occasionally offered as Renaissance originals in the late nineteenth/ early twentieth century.========================================================Icilio Federico JoniFrom a young age, Joni worked in a gilding shop in Siena, Italy, where he discovered his natural talent for working with wood, plaster, and paint. Although he began a restoration business to make extra money, it quickly turned into a forgery business. Most of Joni’s forgeries were replicas of Italian Medieval and Renaissance works of art, specifically panel paintings, triptychs, wooden caskets, and bookbindings. His most well-known forgeries are Tavolette Covers. Only fourteen of his covers have been recovered, yet it is believed that many more survive! One flaw began to give his work away. He dated many of the wooden bindings after 1459, which became an issue because that was the year leather became used for bindings. Like many forgers, he boasted his forging talents in an autobiography Le Memorie di un Pittore di Quadri Antichi.  =================================== Please see my other auctions Thank You Refund Policy: We will issue a FULL REFUND, 100% money back if you are not satisfied with your purchase.
